Chapter 7 - The Underground Tunnel

Dominic drove his car at a hundred miles an hour toward the outskirts of the city.

He ignored the police sirens wailing in the distance.

His entire world narrowed down to the woman and the unborn children he had sworn to protect.

He finally reached the safehouse, only to find the massive mansion engulfed in roaring flames.

"Layla!" Dominic screamed, running toward the burning front doors.

Before he could enter, a heavy steel grate in the garden suddenly pushed open.

Matteo crawled out of the hidden smuggler tunnel, covered in soot and bleeding from his shoulder.

He reached down and pulled a screaming Layla out of the dark hole.

Dominic dropped to his knees and pulled her into his arms.

"I have you," he whispered frantically, kissing her ash-covered face.

Layla gripped his shirt with terrifying strength.

"Dominic, it hurts so much," she cried in agony.

A puddle of clear fluid mixed with blood stained the snow beneath her legs.

The trauma and the residual poison had triggered premature labor.

"We have to move," Matteo warned, pointing toward the tree line.

"Celeste's assassins are sweeping the perimeter."

Dominic lifted Layla effortlessly and followed Matteo back into the dark tunnel system.

They navigated the damp, claustrophobic passages until they reached an old emergency bunker.

Dominic kicked the heavy door open and laid Layla down on a dusty military cot.

He grabbed a first aid kit and a portable lantern from the wall.

"I need a doctor!" Layla screamed as another massive contraction hit her body.

Dominic gripped her hand tightly.

"There is no doctor coming, Layla."

Before Dominic could say another word, the heavy steel door of the bunker began to dent inward.

Someone on the other side was attaching explosive breaching charges to the metal frame.
