Chapter 4 - The Anonymous Charity

Pure, unadulterated rage completely consumed Dominic's mind.

Someone was trying to murder the mother of his unborn children.

He stormed into the medical room where Layla was resting on a pristine white bed.

She looked small and fragile surrounded by the sterile equipment.

"Who has been feeding you poison, Layla?" Dominic demanded, struggling to keep his voice steady.

Layla blinked in confusion and tried to sit up.

"Poison?" she repeated, her hands instinctively covering her belly.

"I have not taken anything except the prenatal vitamins."

Dominic stepped closer to the bed.

"Where did you get them?"

Layla looked down at her lap with shame in her eyes.

"They arrived in the mail every week from an anonymous charity organization."

"I could not afford the expensive brands, so I took them."

Dominic closed his eyes as the sickening realization washed over him.

The enemy had exploited her poverty to slowly assassinate his heirs.

He turned and walked out of the room, dialing Matteo's encrypted number.

"Find the tracking data for every package delivered to Layla's apartment," Dominic ordered.

He waited in the security control room for three agonizing hours.

Matteo finally returned with a laptop and placed it on the metal desk.

"The packages were shipped from a private pharmacy in New York," Matteo explained.

"But I traced the original payment back to a heavily encrypted offshore account."

Dominic stared at the screen.

"Break the encryption."

Matteo typed rapidly on the keyboard until a name finally flashed on the screen.

Dominic felt the blood freeze in his veins.

The account belonged to Celeste Rossi, his own strategic fiancée.
