Chapter 3 - The Silent Poison

The deafening sound of crunching metal echoed through the narrow alley.

Dominic threw his entire body over Layla to shield her from the shattering glass.

The armored car spun violently before slamming into a concrete pillar.

Gunfire immediately erupted outside as Matteo and the guards engaged the attackers.

Dominic kicked his jammed door open and dragged Layla out of the ruined vehicle.

"Are you hurt?" he shouted over the noise of the automatic weapons.

Layla was sobbing and clutching her stomach tightly.

"The babies," she gasped, her face pale with shock.

Dominic scooped her into his arms and carried her through the chaotic crossfire.

He reached Matteo's backup vehicle and ordered the driver to speed away.

They drove recklessly through the city until they reached a highly guarded safehouse on the outskirts of Chicago.

A private physician was already waiting in the underground medical bay.

Dominic paced the hallway like a caged predator while the doctor examined Layla.

He knew in his soul that the children she carried belonged to him.

An hour later, the doctor stepped out of the room with a grim expression.

"The mother and the twins are physically stable for now, Mister Gallo," the doctor reported.

Dominic exhaled a heavy breath of relief.

"But there is a severe complication," the doctor continued softly.

Dominic stopped pacing and narrowed his dark eyes.

"Explain."

The doctor held up a blood test result printed on a white sheet of paper.

"I found highly elevated levels of a rare, slow-acting toxin in her bloodstream."

The doctor looked at Dominic with absolute dread.

"Someone has been methodically poisoning her for weeks."
