Chapter 8 - The Cost of Loyalty

Lorenzo screamed for the medic as he gently laid his son back into the crib. He dropped to the floor and pulled Hunter's limp body into his lap. The medic rushed over, ripping the sleeve of her uniform to expose the angry, red scratch on her arm. "The toxin from the knife is acting fast, her pulse is extremely weak," the medic shouted. Lorenzo held her pale face, completely terrified of losing the woman who had brought light back into his darkness. "Give her the antidote, give her whatever you gave my son!" Lorenzo demanded fiercely. The medic quickly prepared an adult dose of the serum and injected it directly into her vein. Lorenzo refused to leave her side, carrying her gently to his massive bed in the master suite. He sat in a chair beside her for three agonizing days, holding her hand and refusing to sleep. He watched her chest rise and fall, praying for her to open her beautiful, sorrowful eyes. On the morning of the fourth day, Hunter finally stirred, letting out a soft, confused groan. Lorenzo immediately leaned over, his heart soaring as she slowly blinked her eyes open. "Where is Leo?" Hunter whispered, her maternal instinct prioritizing the baby over her own life. "He is perfectly safe and healthy, thanks to you," Lorenzo smiled, kissing her knuckles gently. Hunter looked at the powerful, ruthless mafia boss and saw only a vulnerable, loving father. She reached up and gently touched his cheek, tracing the dark stubble on his jawline. "I thought I lost you," Lorenzo admitted, his voice thick with raw, unfiltered emotion. "You are stuck with me, Lorenzo Rossi," Hunter smiled weakly, leaning into his touch. He leaned down and captured her lips in a soft, passionate kiss that sealed their undeniable bond. They had both suffered unimaginable losses, but together, they had found a beautiful reason to live. Their peaceful moment was abruptly interrupted by a heavy knock on the bedroom door. Lorenzo's elderly consigliere, a man who had served the family for forty years, walked into the room. The old man held a thick, heavily classified dossier in his trembling hands. "We interrogated Dr. Halloran in the basement before he died," the consigliere announced grimly. "The Moretti family did not plant the car bomb that killed your wife, Lorenzo." The old man placed the file on the bed, revealing a terrifying photograph of the true mastermind. "The man who murdered Sophia and paid the doctor to kill your son is your own uncle, Carlo."
