Chapter 2 - The Darkness Inside
The darkness of the nursery felt suffocating as the armed guards raised their heavy flashlights. Lorenzo stood protectively in front of Hunter and the baby, his gun aimed steadily at the hallway. "Secure the perimeter and find out who killed the generator," Lorenzo commanded his men. The guards rushed out, leaving Lorenzo alone in the dim room with Hunter and the terrified night nurse. The nurse scrambled backward, trying to hide her half-empty glass of wine in the shadows. Lorenzo turned his lethal gaze toward the trembling medical professional. "You were drinking while my son was dying," Lorenzo stated, his voice completely devoid of emotion. "No, sir, I swear I was just resting my eyes for a moment," the nurse pleaded desperately. Lorenzo did not waste a single second on her pathetic lies. "Pack your belongings and leave my estate immediately, before I decide to bury you in the garden." The nurse ran out of the room, sobbing hysterically into her trembling hands. Lorenzo turned his attention back to the young maid holding his fragile heir. Hunter was softly stroking Leo's dark hair, ignoring the chaos around them as she fed the infant. The mafia boss felt a strange, unfamiliar ache in his chest as he watched them bond. He demanded to know her name and how she had managed to make the baby eat. Hunter looked up, her beautiful, grief-stricken eyes meeting his intense stare. She explained the tragic loss of her own daughter in a quiet, broken whisper. Lorenzo listened intently, recognizing the raw, bleeding sorrow of a parent who had lost everything. He declared that she would never scrub another floor in his mansion again. She was going to live in the secure master suite and serve as his son's exclusive caretaker. Hunter nodded slowly, willing to do absolutely anything to keep the innocent baby alive. Suddenly, Lorenzo's head of security rushed back into the room holding a glowing tablet. "Boss, the power outage was a distraction orchestrated by a mole inside our staff," the guard warned. "I ran a deep background check on this new maid while the system was rebooting." The guard pointed a hostile finger directly at Hunter's pale face. "Her abusive ex-boyfriend is Tommy Vance, a known hitman for the Moretti family." Lorenzo raised his gun once again, pointing it straight at Hunter's heart. "Did the Morettis send you here to finish the job they started with my wife?" Lorenzo demanded fiercely.
