Chapter 9 - The Ultimate Sacrifice

I stared at the woman who had given birth to me, finally realizing she was completely dead inside.
I wrapped my arms tighter around Leo, refusing to surrender him to a monster.
“If you want him, you will have to kill me,” I screamed over the pouring rain.
My mother’s eyes went completely cold and devoid of any human emotion.
She pulled the heavy trigger.
Dante threw himself violently backward, taking the bullet squarely in his own chest.
He collapsed heavily onto the muddy dock, coughing up dark, crimson blood.
I screamed in absolute terror, dropping to my knees beside him.
My mother scoffed, stepping closer to finish the job.
“How painfully dramatic.”
She raised her revolver to aim at my head once again.
Before she could pull the trigger a second time, the deafening roar of a helicopter engine shattered the night air.
A massive spotlight hit the dock, blinding my mother and her armed mercenaries instantly.
Dante’s loyal reinforcements, heavily armed tactical squads, dropped rapidly from the sky on fast-ropes.
My mother’s men panicked and immediately began firing wildly into the sky.
A chaotic, brutal firefight erupted across the entire shoreline.
I dragged Dante’s heavy, bleeding body behind a thick concrete pillar for cover.
He grabbed my hand weakly, his dark eyes losing focus rapidly.
“Keep him safe, Alina,” he whispered before his eyes rolled completely back.
My mother suddenly lunged around the concrete pillar, desperate to grab the baby in the chaos.

I picked up Dante’s discarded pistol with shaking hands and aimed it directly at her chest.
I closed my eyes tightly and pulled the trigger.
