Chapter 8 - The Bloody Escape

Dante quickly loaded two spare magazines into his own weapon despite his injured arm.

We formulated a desperate, reckless plan to break out through the secondary ventilation tunnel.

I strapped Leo securely to my chest using a tactical vest from the supply wall.

Dante pried the heavy steel grate off the floor, revealing a dark, incredibly narrow pipe leading toward the lake.

“I will go first,” Dante whispered, sliding into the suffocating darkness.

I followed closely behind him, the cold, damp walls pressing tightly against my shoulders.

We crawled through the filthy water for twenty agonizing minutes while explosions rocked the earth above us.

We finally emerged onto the muddy banks of the lake, freezing rain soaking us instantly.

The mansion behind us was fully engulfed in massive, towering flames.

Dante led us toward a hidden boathouse where a sleek, armored speedboat was docked in the shadows.

Before we could reach the wooden dock, high-powered floodlights suddenly blinded us from the tree line.

A dozen armed men stepped out of the darkness, their rifles aimed directly at our chests.

My mother walked slowly out from the center of the armed circle, holding a silver revolver.

She wore an expensive tailored suit, looking absolutely nothing like the tired maid who had raised me.

“You always were a stubborn, foolish girl, Lena.”

Dante stepped firmly in front of me, shielding Leo and me with his injured body.

“Let them go, Elena.”

My mother cocked the hammer of her revolver with a wicked, triumphant smile.

“I only need the baby alive, Dante.”

She pointed the gun directly at my face without a single trace of hesitation.

“Drop the baby, Lena, or I will put a bullet through your head right now.”
