Chapter 6 - The Traitor's Price

“He sold us out,” Dante growled, pressing his good hand over the bloody gauze I was holding.
The traitor on the screen was Marco, the same bodyguard who had escorted me from the restaurant.
Marco was actively pointing the assassins toward the hidden entrance of the panic room.
“Can they breach that steel door?” I asked, panic making my voice crack.
Dante shook his head, his breathing becoming shallow and ragged.
“Not without military explosives, but we only have a few hours of oxygen in here.”
I finished taping the tight bandage over his shoulder, earning a grunt of pain from the dangerous man.
Leo was crying softly in the corner, terrified by the loud, echoing thuds coming from the ceiling above us.
I walked over and picked the baby up, rocking him gently until he buried his face in my neck again.
Dante watched us, his dark eyes softening in a way that made my chest ache strangely.
“He trusts you because you smell like Elena,” Dante murmured.
“My mother practically raised him in hiding.”
I realized my mother had sacrificed her entire life, her freedom, and her relationship with me to protect this innocent child.
Suddenly, the secure phone on the wall of the bunker began to ring loudly.
Dante limped over and hit the speaker button.
Marco’s arrogant, cruel voice echoed through the small concrete room.
“It is over, Boss.”
Dante leaned against the wall, his voice icy and completely devoid of fear.
“How much did the Moretti family pay you to betray your brothers, Marco?”
Marco laughed a dark, ugly laugh.
“The Morettis didn't pay me a single dime, Dante.”

My breath caught as the voice on the other end of the line suddenly shifted to a familiar, feminine tone.
“I paid him, Dante,” my mother's voice echoed into the room.
