Chapter 2 - The Black Car

Panic exploded in my chest as the two massive bodyguards flanked my sides.

“You cannot just kidnap me!”

I looked desperately at Mr. Carrillo for help.

My manager immediately looked down at his shoes.

“You are fired, Alina, please just go with them quietly.”

Tears of frustration and sheer terror pricked my eyes.

Leo was still clinging to my apron, perfectly content and completely oblivious to the nightmare unfolding.

Dante placed a heavy, warm hand gently against the small of my back.

He guided me out the front door and into the freezing Boston night.

A line of black SUVs idled at the curb.

He opened the door to the center vehicle and motioned for me to get inside with the baby.

I slid into the leather seat, holding Leo tightly against my chest.

Dante climbed in beside me, and the car sped away from the restaurant instantly.

The silence inside the heavy, bulletproof cabin was suffocating.

“My mother warned me about men with dragon tattoos,” I whispered into the dark.

Dante poured two glasses of amber liquid from a crystal decanter in the center console.

“Your mother was a very smart woman, Lena.”

My breath completely caught in my throat at the sound of my secret childhood nickname.

“How do you know that name?”

Dante handed me a glass, but I refused to take it.

“Because your mother was my late wife’s personal bodyguard.”

I stared at him, my mind unable to process the absolute impossibility of his words.

My mother was a hotel maid, not a mafia bodyguard.

“That is a lie,” I snapped defensively.

Dante unbuttoned his suit jacket and sighed heavily.

“She did not disappear eight months ago, Lena.”

He leaned closer, the scent of expensive cologne and danger washing over me.

“She stole three million dollars from my syndicate, murdered my wife, and kidnapped my newborn son.”
