Chapter 2 - The Traitor Inside

Gabriel did not hesitate to follow her through the ruined safe house.
They sprinted through the pouring rain toward a heavily armored SUV parked in the alleyway.
Claire kept her weapon raised, checking every single shadow for approaching enemies.
Gabriel unlocked the vehicle, and they quickly climbed into the backseat.
Mason stumbled out of the darkness and jumped into the driver’s seat, clutching his bleeding shoulder.
"Get us out of here right now," Gabriel barked at his trusted security captain.
Mason started the engine, but he did not put the vehicle into drive.
Gabriel demanded to know why they were still sitting in the alley.
Claire locked eyes with Mason in the rearview mirror, her expression hardening into pure ice.
"He isn't going to drive us anywhere, Gabriel," Claire said quietly.
Mason slowly turned around in the driver’s seat.
Instead of gripping the steering wheel, he was pointing a heavy revolver directly at Gabriel’s chest.
"Damian Cross sends his warmest regards, boss," Mason sneered maliciously.
Gabriel felt a sickening wave of betrayal wash over him.
His most trusted friend had sold him out to his greatest enemy.
"How much did he pay you to betray my family?" Gabriel asked, stalling for time.
"Enough to ensure I never have to take orders from you again," Mason laughed.
Mason’s finger began to tighten on the heavy steel trigger.
Gabriel braced himself for the fatal impact.

Claire had thrown a hidden combat knife directly into Mason’s throat.
