Chapter 7 - Through the Smoke

The acrid, burning chemical smoke aggressively filled my lungs, causing my eyes to water uncontrollably.
Owen grabbed my wrist with an iron grip, violently dragging me away from the heavily barricaded front entrance.
Deafening automatic gunfire immediately began tearing through the expensive leather furniture as the assault team swarmed into the room.
"Keep your head down and do not stop moving!"
Owen yelled the command over the chaotic roar of the terrifying firefight, firing his assault rifle blindly into the thick smoke to keep the attackers pinned down.
We sprinted desperately toward the back wall of the armory, where Owen kicked away an old, dusty rug to reveal a hidden steel trapdoor.
He aggressively hauled the heavy door open and shoved me down into a dark, narrow smuggling tunnel just as a bullet shattered the concrete near his head.
He jumped down right behind me, slamming the steel door shut and throwing the heavy interior deadbolt completely into place.
The sounds of the violent gun battle were instantly muffled, replaced by the damp, foul-smelling air of the forgotten prohibition-era tunnel.
We ran blindly through the pitch-black darkness for what felt like miles, guided only by the small tactical flashlight mounted to Owen's weapon.
The tunnel eventually dumped us out into an abandoned subway maintenance shaft, miles away from the compromised safe house.
We forcefully broke through a chained chain-link fence and emerged onto the slick, rain-soaked streets of a deserted industrial district.
Owen immediately spotted a sleek, black motorcycle parked carelessly outside a rundown mechanic's garage with the keys still in the ignition.
He hot-wired the ignition in seconds, tossing me a spare helmet he found strapped to the back seat.
I wrapped my arms tightly around his waist as he launched the incredibly fast bike into the freezing night, speeding recklessly toward the naval shipyard.
We arrived at the massive, rusted gates of the shipyard with exactly ten terrifying minutes left on my brother’s bomb timer.
Owen killed the engine a block away, and we silently infiltrated the perimeter by cutting a hole through the heavily rusted security fence.
The massive main warehouse was eerily quiet, illuminated only by a few flickering, yellow industrial lights near the ceiling.
We crept quietly along the rusted metal catwalks suspended high above the main shipping floor.
I looked down and immediately spotted my brother sitting completely motionless in a metal chair near the center of the massive room.
My heart leaped violently in my chest, and I completely ignored Owen's silent hand signal commanding me to stay put.
I frantically scrambled down the metal stairs, desperately rushing across the open concrete floor toward my captured brother.
"Leo, I am right here, I am going to get you out!"
I screamed his name as I reached out to grab his trembling shoulder.
As I forcefully spun the metal chair around, my blood instantly turned entirely to ice.
May you like
It was not my brother sitting in the chair, but rather a highly realistic plastic mannequin dressed precisely in Leo's clothes.
The actual explosive device was strapped securely to the massive, structural support pillar holding up the entire warehouse roof directly above my head.
