Chapter 5 - Sins of the Father

The cold steel barrel of the pistol was pressed firmly against the side of my trembling ribs.
The confined space inside the dark SUV felt incredibly suffocating as Owen stared at me with absolute, unfiltered hatred.
"Did your treacherous father send you to this hospital to finally finish the job?"
His voice was devoid of any human warmth, sounding exactly like the ruthless crime boss the city feared.
Tears of sheer panic welled up in my eyes, completely blinding my vision of the dimly lit parking garage.
"My father died of a massive heart attack over a year ago, completely buried in massive gambling debts."
I choked back a sob, my hands gripping the leather steering wheel tightly in desperation.
"I took this miserable cleaning job just to pay off the loan sharks so they would stop threatening my little brother."
Owen did not lower the heavy weapon, carefully studying every micro-expression on my terrified face to determine if I was lying.
He had survived in the brutal criminal underworld by trusting his sharp instincts, and right now, his instincts were violently clashing.
"He owed my family syndicate over a million dollars, Clara."
The revelation hit me like a physical blow to the stomach, explaining exactly why the loan sharks had been so ruthlessly aggressive.
I squeezed my eyes shut, fully expecting him to pull the trigger and settle my father's massive debt with my blood.
Instead, I heard the distinct mechanical click of the pistol's safety being carefully engaged.
"Drive the car and break through the main security gate right now."
I snapped my eyes open, shifting the heavy SUV into drive and slamming my foot violently down onto the gas pedal.
The powerful engine roared as we accelerated toward the thick, wooden security barricade blocking the exit ramp.
We smashed through the heavy barrier with a deafening splintering of wood, bursting out into the freezing, rain-soaked streets of Manhattan.
I navigated the dark, slick roads aggressively, relying on my deep knowledge of the city's intricate back alleys to completely lose any pursuit.
Owen directed me toward a heavily fortified, secret safe house located inside an abandoned textile warehouse deep in Brooklyn.
We pulled into the hidden loading bay, the massive steel doors automatically shutting securely behind us to block out the outside world.
The interior of the safe house was surprisingly luxurious, filled with expensive leather furniture and highly advanced surveillance equipment.
Owen collapsed onto a thick leather sofa, finally allowing his exhausted body to rest after the agonizing ordeal.
"I am going to completely dismantle the people who did this to me, Clara, and I am going to make sure your brother is safe."
It was a stunning, unexpected promise from a man whose entire life was built on ruthless vengeance.
I walked toward the kitchen area to grab us some bottled water, feeling a fragile sense of safety for the very first time tonight.
Suddenly, the massive flat-screen television mounted on the brick wall flickered to life completely on its own.
The screen did not display a news channel, but rather a high-definition, live video feed from a dark basement.

My heart completely stopped as I recognized the terrified, tear-stained face of my younger brother, Leo.
He was tied securely to a metal chair, and strapped directly to his chest was an intricate explosive device with a glowing red timer.
