Chapter 14 - The Master's Strategy
I stared at Owen in absolute, mind-numbing disbelief, unable to process the incredible words he had just spoken.
"You knew?" I gasped, my chest heaving as the shocking revelation washed over me.
Owen reached up and gently wiped a stray tear from my cheek with his thumb, his touch incredibly warm and reassuring.
"I am the most powerful syndicate boss on the eastern seaboard, Clara. I do not invite anyone into my home without thoroughly investigating every single second of their past."
He explained that his private hackers had intercepted the original police reports and connected my father's massive debt to the exact vehicle used in the ambush.
"Why didn't you say anything?" I asked, completely bewildered by his incredible restraint.
"Because I also knew that you were a terrified teenager trying to save your brother's life," Owen replied smoothly.
"You spent two years scrubbing floors to pay off a debt that was not yours, and you saved my life three separate times in that hospital."
He leaned in, pressing a soft, lingering kiss to my forehead.
"The girl who drove that car was a victim. The woman standing in front of me is my queen, and I will never let anyone use your past to hurt you again."
A massive, overwhelming wave of absolute relief and profound love entirely consumed my heart.
He had forgiven my darkest secret before I even had the courage to confess it.
Owen’s demeanor instantly shifted from a comforting lover back to a lethal, calculating commander.
"Russo thinks he has backed you into a corner, which means he is currently completely blind to his own vulnerability."
Owen walked to the safe, typing a rapid manual override code that bypassed the retinal scanner entirely.
The heavy steel door swung open, and he retrieved a thick, encrypted digital hard drive.
He held it out to me, a dark, terrifyingly brilliant smile spreading across his handsome face.
"You are going to take this to the abandoned church exactly as he demanded."
