Chapter 9 - The Final Betrayal

The freezing air bit into Arthur's skin like a thousand tiny needles.

He frantically searched his pockets, his panicked breaths forming thick, white clouds in the freezing room.

He remembered clearly having the ring on his chain when they were fighting in the shipping warehouse.

Julian noticed Arthur's sheer panic and asked through chattering teeth what was wrong.

Arthur confessed that without the signet ring, the deletion protocol would completely fail in sixty seconds.

Chloe suddenly stepped forward, her face completely unreadable behind a mask of frost and dirt.

She reached into her tactical vest and slowly pulled out Arthur's silver signet ring.

Arthur stared at her in utter confusion, demanding to know how she had managed to take it from him.

Chloe admitted she had stolen it during the chaos of the explosion when she pretended to stumble into him.

She didn't hand the ring back to Arthur; instead, she backed away toward the emergency override panel.

Julian begged her to give it back, reminding her that they were all going to freeze to death.

Chloe looked at Julian with a flicker of genuine sadness, but her grip on the ring only tightened.

She revealed that Arthur's father hadn't hired her to protect the Vance family or to watch over Arthur.

Her actual employer was a third, hidden faction that wanted both the Sterling and Vance empires utterly destroyed.

She slid the ring into the override panel, transferring all the billions not to Silas, but to an untraceable offshore account.

The server room doors instantly clicked unlocked as the transfer successfully completed.

Elias's angry screams echoed over the intercom as he realized he had just been completely robbed.

Chloe offered a mock salute to the boys, slipped through the partially opened doors, and locked them back inside.

Arthur smashed his fists against the steel door, watching the girl who outplayed everyone disappear down the tunnel.

Julian sank to the freezing floor, laughing hysterically at the sheer, beautiful absurdity of their complete ruin.

The digital countdown on the terminal hit zero, and the entire server network permanently wiped itself clean.

Arthur sat down next to Julian in the freezing dark, fully realizing he was now genuinely a poor, penniless student.
