Chapter 8 - The Underworld Server

The underground utility tunnels beneath St. Jude University smelled of damp earth and rotting concrete.

Arthur led the way, using a small tactical flashlight to navigate the labyrinth of forgotten maintenance shafts.

Julian walked closely behind him in total silence, still entirely shattered by Chloe's devastating confession.

Chloe covered the rear, her stolen rifle raised and ready for any of Silas's lingering mercenaries.

They finally reached a massive steel blast door hidden behind a crumbling brick facade.

This was the entrance to the black-site server farm where the university's darkest secrets were digitally buried.

Arthur approached the biometric keypad, noting that Silas's men had already bypassed the external security grids.

He carefully poured the vial of his own preserved blood into the DNA sequencing receptacle on the wall.

The heavy steel doors hissed and slowly ground open, revealing a glowing, freezing room filled with massive server racks.

They stepped inside, the humming of the supercomputers drowning out the sound of their shallow breathing.

Arthur rushed to the central terminal, his fingers flying across the keyboard to initiate the final deletion protocol.

He needed exactly three minutes to completely erase Uncle Silas's financial access codes from the global mainframe.

Suddenly, the blast doors behind them slammed shut with a terrifying, deafening metallic boom.

The digital temperature gauge on the wall immediately began dropping at an alarming, unnatural rate.

Elias's distorted voice crackled through the intercom system, laughing through the heavy static.

He had survived the explosion at the docks and had manually overridden the server room's environmental controls.

Elias announced that he was going to freeze them all to death and physically extract Arthur's DNA once he was a corpse.

Frost quickly began to form on the server racks as the temperature plummeted well below zero.

Julian shivered violently, his expensive, soaked suit offering absolutely no protection against the lethal cold.

Chloe desperately fired her rifle at the reinforced glass of the control booth, but the bullets simply ricocheted off.

Arthur ignored the freezing pain in his hands, furiously typing the final sequence of the deletion code.

The terminal screen flashed a bright green, asking for a secondary physical confirmation to complete the process.

Arthur reached for his neck, realizing with absolute horror that his biometric signet ring was missing.
