Chapter 8 - The Cornered Rat

The interrogation of the mercenaries was swift. Within an hour, Clara’s team had extracted the burner phone records connecting them directly to Eleanor Hawthorne. The FBI was immediately notified, and a federal strike team was dispatched to Eleanor’s location.
But Eleanor wasn't at the St. Regis.
As Clara and Arthur were leaving the museum, descending the grand marble steps toward their armored motorcade, a black sedan tore through the police barricades.
The engine roared as the car sped directly toward Clara.
"Get down!" Arthur shouted, tackling Clara to the pavement as the Vanguard security detail opened fire.
Bullets shattered the windshield of the sedan, but it didn't stop. It slammed violently into one of the armored SUVs, spinning out of control and crashing into a concrete pillar. The horn blared continuously in the night air.
Marcus and his team surrounded the wrecked vehicle, weapons drawn.
The driver’s side door groaned open.
Eleanor Hawthorne stumbled out. She was bleeding from a severe cut on her forehead, her clothes torn and dirty. She looked nothing like the untouchable matriarch of San Francisco. She looked like a desperate, broken monster. She was holding a silver revolver, her hands shaking violently.
"You ruined me!" Eleanor screamed, pointing the gun wildly between Clara and Arthur, who were shielded behind an armored door. "You took my money! You took my son! You took my life!"
"You did this to yourself, Eleanor!" Arthur yelled back, his voice thick with sorrow and rage. "Put the gun down! It's over!"
"It's never over!" Eleanor shrieked, aiming directly at Clara. "If I can't have my legacy, you can't have yours!"
Before she could pull the trigger, a single, suppressed gunshot echoed through the night.
Eleanor gasped, dropping the revolver. She looked down at her shoulder, where a blossom of red was rapidly spreading across her torn silk blouse. Marcus, Clara’s head of security, had fired a precision shot to disarm her.
Eleanor collapsed to her knees on the cold concrete. The federal agents arrived moments later, swarming the fallen matriarch, placing her in heavy iron handcuffs.
Clara stood up, brushing the dust from her gold gown. She walked slowly toward Eleanor, stopping just out of reach. Eleanor looked up, tears of pain and absolute defeat streaming down her face.

"You thought you were a queen, Eleanor," Clara said softly, the flashing red and blue lights illuminating her stoic face. "But you were just a tyrant in a glass castle. And now, the glass is broken."
Clara turned her back and walked away, leaving Eleanor Hawthorne to the dark.
