Chapter 3 - Unmasking the Queen

"What are you talking about?" Eleanor gasped, clutching her chest. "Hawthorne Real Estate is a family dynasty! You own nothing!"

"You're right," Clara smiled, a dark, brilliant expression. "Hawthorne Real Estate was a dynasty. Until last week, when your massive, uncollateralized debts caught up with you. Your board of directors held an emergency vote to avoid bankruptcy. They sold a controlling fifty-one percent stake to a private equity firm."

Arthur stepped forward, his mind racing. "Clara, Vanguard Holdings bought that debt. They are a European syndicate. How do you..."

"Because Vanguard Holdings is a subsidiary," Clara interrupted gently, looking at her husband with a mixture of love and apology. "Of the Sterling-Frost Consortium."

A shockwave ripped through the room. The Sterling-Frost Consortium was a mythical entity in the financial world—a trillion-dollar empire that controlled European banks, global shipping lanes, and luxury conglomerates.

Eleanor laughed, a hysterical, manic sound. "You? The Sterling-Frost Consortium? You grew up in a trailer park in Nevada!"

"I grew up on a private estate in Geneva," Clara corrected, her posture straightening, radiating an overwhelming, aristocratic dominance that made Eleanor look like a peasant. "My name is Clara Frost. I am the sole heiress to the Consortium. I left Switzerland because I wanted a life free of the sycophants who only saw my net worth. I wanted to build my own identity. I wanted a man who would love me if I had absolutely nothing."

She looked at Arthur. "And I found him."

Arthur was completely speechless. The woman he had spent three years fiercely protecting from the snobbery of his world was secretly the most powerful person in the room.

"But then," Clara turned her gaze back to Eleanor, her eyes narrowing into slits of pure ice, "I met you. You ridiculed me. You humiliated me. You tried to break my spirit because you thought I was defenseless. You thought I was a wounded animal you could torture for sport."

Clara snapped her fingers. The massive double doors of the atrium swung open. A team of federal agents in tactical windbreakers marched into the room, followed by two men in sharp tailored suits holding briefcases.

"Eleanor Hawthorne," one of the suits announced, holding up a federal warrant. "We have a warrant for your arrest on charges of corporate embezzlement, wire fraud, and conspiracy to commit forgery."

Eleanor stumbled backward, knocking over a tray of champagne. The crystal shattered on the marble floor. "Arthur! Do something! Arthur, help me!"

Arthur stood rooted to the spot. He looked at the forged DNA test in Eleanor's attorney's hands, then at the undeniable proof of her theft on the screens. He looked at the mother who had tried to destroy his family, and the wife who had endured hell to protect it.

Arthur turned his back on his mother.

"Take her," Arthur said to the agents.
