Chapter 5 - A New Reign

By Tuesday morning, the landscape of San Francisco’s financial district had been fundamentally terraformed.

Clara didn't return to the Hawthorne Manor. Instead, she and Arthur relocated to the penthouse suite of the newly acquired Vanguard Tower. The space was a breathtaking monument to modern power—floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the bay, bulletproof glass, and a dedicated security team of former special forces operatives.

Clara sat behind a massive slab of obsidian that served as her desk. She was no longer wearing the understated, modest clothing she had adopted for her "blue-collar" persona. She wore a tailored, razor-sharp white Tom Ford suit. She looked like an apex predator.

Arthur sat opposite her, reviewing the Hawthorne financial ledgers. They were working as a unified front.

"She’s bleeding out," Arthur reported, looking at his tablet. "With the embezzlement charges public, the banks have frozen her personal assets. The board formally removed her as Chairwoman this morning. She’s operating out of a rented suite at the St. Regis, burning through whatever cash she hid under the mattress."

"It's not enough," Clara said smoothly, typing on her encrypted laptop. "Eleanor has spent thirty years curating favors. She has politicians in her pocket and judges on her payroll. As long as she has social capital, she is a threat."

The intercom on Clara's desk buzzed. "Ms. Frost, you have a visitor. Julian Sterling is here."

Clara smiled. Julian Sterling was the most ruthless media mogul on the West Coast. He was also a man Eleanor Hawthorne had publicly humiliated a decade ago.

"Send him in," Clara said.

Julian entered, a tall man with silver hair and a sharp, calculating smile. "Clara Frost. The ghost of Geneva. I must say, your performance at the banquet was legendary."

"Thank you, Julian," Clara gestured to a leather chair. "I assume you received the dossier I sent?"

Julian’s smile widened into a predatory grin. "I did. The complete list of Eleanor’s blackmail material on the city’s elite. Bribes, affairs, illegal stock tips. If I publish this, she won't just be poor. She will be a pariah. The people she protected will want her head on a spike."

"Publish it," Arthur said, leaning forward, his voice completely devoid of mercy for his mother. "Front page. Every outlet you own. Leave nothing but ash."

May you like

Julian looked at Arthur, slightly surprised by the son’s ruthlessness, then nodded. "It hits the presses at midnight. By tomorrow morning, Eleanor Hawthorne will be the most hated woman in America."

Clara leaned back in her chair. The trap was set. The social execution was in motion. But she knew Eleanor better than anyone. Eleanor wouldn't surrender. She would double down.
