Chapter 2 - The Microphone

Eleanor’s triumphant smirk faltered for a fraction of a second. She had expected Clara to weep. She had expected Clara to drop to her knees and beg Arthur for forgiveness, cementing the narrative of the pathetic, lying street rat.

"The papers have been served, Clara," Eleanor sneered, recovering her poise. "Security will escort you to the gates. You will leave with nothing but the cheap clothes you came with."

"Security isn't going to do anything," Clara said, stepping up to the grand piano and picking up a spare microphone. "Because security no longer works for you."

Eleanor scoffed, a harsh, abrasive sound. "You're delusional."

Clara tapped the microphone. "Let's talk about truth, Eleanor. Let's talk about the DNA test you just referenced."

Clara pulled a sleek, black smartphone from her clutch. She tapped the screen once. Instantly, the massive digital projection screens flanking the ballroom—intended to show slideshows of baby Oliver—flashed black. A second later, a high-definition video began playing.

It was hidden camera footage. The setting was unmistakable: Eleanor’s private study. Eleanor was sitting at her mahogany desk, handing a thick stack of cash to a man in a lab coat.

"I want the DNA test swapped," Eleanor’s voice boomed through the ballroom speakers, crisp and undeniable. "Make it look like the child belongs to that mechanic she used to date. And the financial ledgers—fabricate the offshore accounts. I want her ruined by the hundred-day banquet."

The silence in the grand atrium was so profound you could hear the champagne bubbles popping in the glasses.

Eleanor’s face turned the color of wet ash. She staggered back a step. "That... that is a deep-fake! An AI fabrication!"

"Is it?" Clara asked smoothly. She tapped her screen again.

A new document flashed on the screens. It was a wire transfer receipt from Hawthorne Enterprises.

"While you were busy forging documents to frame me for theft," Clara said, her voice ringing with lethal authority, "you were actually stealing. Three hundred million dollars, funneled from the Hawthorne Pension Fund into a shell company in the Cayman Islands. A shell company registered to your maiden name."

Arthur stared at the screens, his breath hitching. He turned to his mother, absolute horror and betrayal masking his features. "Mom... what did you do?"

"Arthur, she hacked my computer! She planted this!" Eleanor shrieked, the regal veneer completely shattering. She looked at the crowd, her billionaire peers, who were now staring at her with disgust and predatory intrigue. "Guards! Arrest this woman! Throw her out!"

The eight massive security guards lining the room didn't move a muscle.

"I told you, Eleanor," Clara whispered, her voice dropping to a terrifying, deadly pitch. "They don't work for you anymore. Because as of 4:00 PM today, you don't own this house. You don't own Hawthorne Real Estate. And you don't own me."

Clara turned to the crowd, the wounded, blue-collar girl evaporating into thin air. In her place stood a queen, forged in fire, ready to burn an empire to the ground.
