Chapter 9 - A Debt Repaid

The aftermath of Ms. Thorne’s arrest sent shockwaves through the estate, but the atmosphere instantly lifted. It was as if a dark, suffocating cloud had been blown away. The staff, realizing they were free from her cruelty, worked with genuine smiles.

But Julian Astor wasn't finished.

Two days after the incident, Julian summoned Elodie to his study. She walked in, no longer wearing a faded uniform, but a warm, tailored woolen skirt and a soft cashmere sweater he had ordered for her.

"Sit, Elodie," Julian said, gesturing to the leather chair opposite his desk.

"Mr. Astor, I don't know how to thank you," Elodie began, twisting her fingers in her lap. "If you hadn't come back..."

"I came back because I found the embezzlement earlier than I expected, and I knew she would try to silence you," Julian said, his eyes serious. He leaned forward, sliding a thick envelope across the desk. "Open it."

Elodie hesitated, then took the envelope. Inside was a massive check, made out to her name. The amount had six zeros. She gasped, dropping it as if it burned her. "Sir, I can't accept this! It's too much. I only did my job."

"That is not a bonus, Elodie. That is restitution," Julian said firmly. "I am the master of this estate. What happened under this roof, the abuse, the starvation, the framing... it happened on my watch. I am legally and morally responsible for the environment my staff is subjected to. That money is compensation for the trauma you endured."

"Julian..." she whispered, using his first name for the first time without realizing it.

He didn't flinch. In fact, his eyes softened. "There's more. I contacted the board of directors at St. Jude's Medical Center this morning. Lily is being transferred to their premier pulmonary wing tomorrow. Her treatments, her medication, and her future surgeries will be completely covered by the Astor Foundation. In perpetuity."

Elodie broke down. She buried her face in her hands, sobbing uncontrollably. The crushing, terrifying weight of the world that she had carried on her small shoulders for years was suddenly, miraculously, lifted.

Julian stood up, walking around the desk. He didn't offer empty platitudes. He simply knelt beside her chair and placed a warm, reassuring hand on her shoulder, letting her cry out years of held-back terror and grief.

"She's going to live," Elodie gasped, looking up at him with shining, grateful eyes. "Lily is going to live."

"She is," Julian smiled, a genuine, breathtaking smile. "And so are you, Elodie. It's time you started living for yourself, too."
