Chapter 4 - The Tipping of the Scales

Julian Astor was a man who appreciated order. He had spent the morning in his study, reviewing the estate's financial ledgers, searching for discrepancies. The Astor fortune was vast, but Julian was meticulous. As he walked toward the solarium to take his mid-morning coffee, he expected quiet luxury.

Instead, he saw a nightmare.

Through the massive glass panes, he saw a fragile figure clinging to a ladder in the biting blizzard. Her hands were blue. Her lips were a terrifying shade of purple. It was Elodie, scrub brush in hand, literally freezing to death against his windows.

Julian dropped his porcelain coffee cup. It shattered against the hardwood floor.

He didn't walk; he ran. He threw open the heavy French doors, the freezing wind rushing into the warm room. "Elodie! Get down from there right now!"

Elodie jumped at the sound of his booming voice, her numb fingers slipping on the icy ladder. She fell backward. Julian caught her mid-air, wrapping his arms around her freezing body. She was as cold as a corpse, shivering uncontrollably.

"What in God's name are you doing?" Julian roared, carrying her inside and kicking the doors shut. He immediately stripped off his thick cashmere sweater and wrapped it around her trembling shoulders, pulling her close to the roaring fireplace.

"The... the windows," Elodie stammered, her jaw locking up. "Ms. Thorne... she ordered..."

"Ms. Thorne!" Julian bellowed. His voice echoed through the massive halls, carrying a lethal authority that made the very walls seem to shake.

Within moments, the solarium doors opened. Ms. Thorne hurried in, her face pale, expecting a disaster. When she saw Julian kneeling on the floor, holding a freezing, soaking wet Elodie wrapped in his own expensive clothing, she froze.

"Mr. Astor," Ms. Thorne gasped. "What is the meaning of this? Why is this filthy girl in the solarium?"

Julian stood slowly. The look in his eyes was something ancient and terrifying. He stepped toward the head housekeeper, towering over her. "You sent her outside in a blizzard? Without a coat?"

"She... she was being insubordinate," Ms. Thorne stammered, her rigid composure cracking under his lethal stare. "It is standard discipline, sir. The staff must learn—"

"You are a sadist," Julian interrupted, his voice dropping to a deadly whisper. "You use my home as your personal torture chamber. As of this moment, Elodie no longer answers to you."

Ms. Thorne’s eyes widened. "Sir, you cannot undermine my authority. The staff will rebel!"

"Let them," Julian snapped. He looked back at Elodie, who was huddled by the fire, watching him with wide, disbelieving eyes. "Elodie is no longer a maid. She is my new archival assistant in the private library. Her salary is tripled, effective immediately. And if you so much as look in her direction again, Ms. Thorne, I will ensure you never work in this state again. Get out of my sight."
