Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Kitchen

Elodie felt like a prisoner walking to the gallows as she followed Julian Astor through the silent, labyrinthine corridors of the estate. She fully expected him to lead her to the front doors and cast her out into the storm for the crime of almost fainting on his pristine floors. Instead, he pushed open the heavy oak doors leading to the subterranean kitchens.
The massive stainless-steel room was dark, the fires banked for the night. Julian didn't bother turning on the harsh overhead lights; he simply flipped a small switch over the prep counter, casting a warm, golden glow over the butcher block.
"Sit," Julian commanded gently, pointing to a high wooden stool.
Elodie obeyed, too exhausted to fight, her legs shaking so violently she could barely climb onto the seat. She watched in stunned silence as the billionaire heir stripped off his expensive suit jacket, rolled up his crisp white sleeves, and walked into the walk-in pantry. He emerged a moment later with a loaf of artisan bread, a block of sharp cheddar, and a bowl of leftover roasted chicken.
He didn't call for a chef. He didn't ring a bell. He carved the bread himself, his movements surprisingly practiced, and set a massive, steaming plate in front of her.
"Eat," he said, pouring her a glass of milk. "Slowly. If you eat too fast on an empty stomach, you’ll be sick."
Elodie stared at the food. It was more than she had eaten in three days combined. The aroma of the roasted chicken hit her senses, and the primal urge to survive took over. She picked up a piece of bread with trembling hands and took a bite. The taste was overwhelming. A single tear escaped her eye, tracking a clean line through the dust on her cheek.
Julian leaned against the counter opposite her, his arms crossed, watching her with an unreadable expression. "Why are you working at two in the morning, Elodie? The domestic staff's shifts end at nine."
Elodie swallowed hard, clutching the glass of milk. "Ms. Thorne... she said I missed a spot in the ballroom. My punishment was to forfeit dinner and clean the West Gallery before dawn."
Julian’s eyes darkened, the temperature in the room seemingly dropping ten degrees. "She starved you for a smudge?"
Elodie flinched at his tone, looking down at her lap. "It's my fault. I am clumsy. I need this job, Mr. Astor. Please don't tell her you found me. She'll fire me. If I don't get my wages on Friday... my sister..." Elodie stopped, realizing she was speaking out of turn, revealing too much to a man who existed in a completely different universe.

"Tell me about your sister," Julian said softly.
And for the first time in months, Elodie broke. The exhaustion, the fear, the crushing weight of Lily’s illness poured out of her in fractured, hushed whispers in the dark kitchen. She told him about the medical bills, the eviction notices, and the absolute power Ms. Thorne wielded over her life. Julian listened in total silence, the storm raging outside mirroring the storm brewing in his gray eyes.
