Chapter 5 - The Venom of Defeat

For the next two weeks, Elodie’s life transformed into something resembling a dream. The private library was a sanctuary of rich mahogany, leather-bound books, and absolute silence. It was warm, it was safe, and Julian treated her not as a servant, but as a human being. He assigned her the task of digitizing centuries-old family records, a job that required care and intellect, not physical suffering.

With her first advanced paycheck, she bought Lily’s medication in full, a massive winter coat for her sister, and enough groceries to fill their empty cupboards. When she told Lily about her new job, her little sister smiled, the color returning to her pale face. For the first time in years, Elodie felt a fragile, terrifying sense of hope.

But down in the shadows of the estate, Ms. Thorne was festering.

The humiliation of being dressed down by the young master in front of the staff had shattered her iron grip on the house. The other servants were whispering. They were losing their fear of her. To Ms. Thorne, power was oxygen, and Elodie had suffocated her.

Sitting in her private office, Ms. Thorne watched the security monitors. She saw Elodie sitting at a desk in the library, laughing softly at something Julian had said as he walked past. The sight made Ms. Thorne’s blood boil.

"You think you are safe, you little rat," Ms. Thorne muttered, unlocking her desk drawer.

Inside the drawer lay a velvet box. It contained the Astor Emerald Brooch, a priceless antique valued at nearly half a million dollars. Julian had ordered it to be sent to a jeweler for cleaning, entrusting the task to Ms. Thorne before the incident in the solarium.

Ms. Thorne slipped the heavy brooch into her pocket. She knew Julian was leaving for a two-day business trip to New York that evening. The timing was perfect. She would not just fire Elodie; she would destroy her. She would ensure the girl was locked in a federal penitentiary for grand larceny, leaving her sick little sister to rot in the slums.

That night, while Elodie was organizing the upper shelves of the library, Ms. Thorne slipped into the servant’s quarters. She found Elodie’s thin, worn coat hanging on the back of her door. With a vicious, triumphant smile, she slid the emerald brooch deep into the lining of the pocket, sewing it shut with a few quick, practiced stitches. The trap was set.
