Chapter 8 - The Fall of the House of Thorne

The silence in the foyer was absolute. The lead officer handed the phone back to Julian, his expression hardening. He looked at Ms. Thorne, who was now trembling so violently she had to hold onto the marble banister to stay upright.

"It... it's a deep fake," Ms. Thorne stammered wildly, her voice cracking. "He's manipulating the footage! He's infatuated with the girl! He's protecting a thief!"

"I am protecting my estate from a parasite," Julian said, his voice terrifyingly calm. He pulled a thick manila folder from his briefcase and dropped it onto the foyer table. "While I was reviewing the ledgers this morning in the library, I wasn't just checking our investments. I was auditing the household accounts. Elodie helped me digitize the old records. We found discrepancies. Massive ones."

Julian turned to the police. "Over the last five years, Ms. Thorne has embezzled over two point five million dollars from the Astor estate by creating phantom staff on the payroll and siphoning the wages into offshore accounts. The framing of Miss Vance was simply a desperate attempt to remove the one person who was digitizing the very files that proved her guilt."

Ms. Thorne let out a strangled, pathetic noise. She lunged toward the door, trying to flee, but the officers were faster. They grabbed her by the arms, slamming her face-first against the heavy oak doors.

"Agnes Thorne," the officer barked, pulling the handcuffs off Elodie and snapping them violently onto Ms. Thorne’s wrists. "You are under arrest for grand larceny, embezzlement, and filing a false police report."

Elodie stood rubbing her bruised wrists, watching as the tyrant who had terrorized her, starved her, and nearly destroyed her life was reduced to a sobbing, pathetic mess.

As Ms. Thorne was dragged out the front doors into the freezing rain, she looked back at Elodie. There was no defiance left in her eyes, only absolute ruin. The heavy doors slammed shut, echoing with a finality that shook the dust from the chandeliers.

Julian turned to Elodie. The anger vanished from his face, replaced by a profound gentleness. "Are you alright?"

May you like

Elodie couldn't speak. The adrenaline crash hit her like a freight train. She nodded, tears spilling over her cheeks, and finally allowed herself to collapse. This time, Julian caught her completely, pulling her into a tight, grounding embrace.

"It's over," he whispered against her hair. "She's gone. You're safe."
