Chapter 9 - The Reunion

The hospital corridors looked different to Elena now. They weren't an endless, humming nightmare. They were the path to her salvation.
She flashed the temporary restraining order the DA had just frantically emailed to her phone at the security desk. Marcus’s private guards had already fled, realizing their boss was facing life in federal prison.
Elena pushed open the heavy wooden door of room 412.
The room was quiet, lit only by a small bedside lamp. Sitting in the hospital bed, holding a small stuffed bear, was four-year-old Leo. He looked up, his wide, tear-filled eyes blinking in the dim light.
"Mommy?" Leo whispered, his voice trembling.
Elena fell to her knees, but this time, it wasn't out of despair. She wrapped her arms around her son, burying her face in his hair, breathing in the scent of him.
"I'm here, baby," she sobbed, holding him so tight she feared he might break. "I'm right here. Mommy's never leaving you again."

Leo wrapped his small arms around her neck. "Daddy said you went away."
"Daddy was wrong," Elena said, kissing his forehead. "I will always come back for you. Always."
