Chapter 8 - The Cornered Rat

Marcus lunged at Elena, his midnight-blue suit tearing at the seam. But he was too slow. Two off-duty police officers attending the gala rushed the stage, tackling Marcus to the polished floor.

"You can't do this!" Marcus screamed, thrashing against the officers. "I own this city! I own you!"

Elena stood above him, looking down at the man who had terrorized her, beaten her spirit, and tried to take her life.

"You own nothing," Elena whispered, her voice carrying an absolute, untouchable authority. "And you will never touch my son again."

As they dragged Marcus away in handcuffs, his expensive shoes scraping against the floor, Elena didn't stay to talk to the press. She had only one destination in mind.

She walked out of the Plaza Hotel, the flashing red and blue lights of the police cruisers illuminating the wet asphalt. She hailed a cab.

"St. Jude’s Hospital," she told the driver. "Pediatric wing. And please, hurry."
