Chapter 10 - The Rebirth

One year later.
The afternoon sun poured through the massive, floor-to-ceiling windows of the new Sterling-Vance Advocacy Center. The architecture was warm, inviting, and filled with light—the exact opposite of the cold, mint-green walls of the hospital.
Elena sat behind a solid oak desk. She wasn't wearing a flimsy hospital gown or a borrowed cocktail dress. She wore a tailored, ivory suit. Her scars had healed, both the physical ones and the invisible ones.
The door opened, and Silas walked in. His arm was in a sling from a recent surgery, but he looked healthier, sharper.
"The jury reached a verdict," Silas smiled, dropping a newspaper on her desk.
The headline read in bold print: MARCUS STERLING SENTENCED TO FORTY YEARS IN FEDERAL PRISON FOR ATTEMPTED MURDER AND FRAUD.
Elena looked at the headline, feeling no joy, no anger, just a profound, absolute sense of closure. The monster was caged.
"Thank you, Silas," she said softly.
"You saved yourself, Elena," he replied, turning to leave. "I just gave you a ride."

Elena looked out the window. Down in the courtyard below, Leo was running across the grass, laughing as he chased a red balloon.
Elena took a deep, steady breath. The humming in her mind was completely gone, replaced by the beautiful, chaotic, perfect symphony of a life she had fought for, bled for, and finally reclaimed. She stood up, walked out of her office, and went downstairs to join her son in the sun.
