Chapter 1 - The Severance

Marcus didn't flinch. He didn't offer a hand to help Elena off the freezing vinyl floor. He simply reached into the inner pocket of his midnight-blue suit and withdrew a crisp, folded piece of thick legal paper.

"You are hysterical, Elena," Marcus said, his voice as smooth and cold as polished marble. "This is exactly why you are unfit. You can't even stand up."

"Where is he?!" Elena screamed, her voice cracking as a nurse finally rushed over, trying to gently pull her back toward the hospital bed. Elena fought the nurse off, her eyes locked on her husband. "Where is Leo?"

"Leo is safe," Marcus replied, looking down at his flawless Oxford shoes to ensure no hospital fluids had marred the leather. "He is being transferred to the pediatric wing of St. Jude’s. Under my exclusive care. I’ve already spoken to the judge, Elena. An emergency ex-parte order."

He dropped the paper onto the floor in front of her.

Elena’s trembling, bruised fingers reached for it. Through blurred, tear-filled eyes, she read the bold print. Emergency Temporary Custody. Granted to Marcus Sterling. Grounded on the mother's "gross negligence" and "psychological instability."

"Negligence?" Elena whispered, the word tasting like ash in her mouth. "A truck ran a red light! It hit us!"

"The police report says otherwise," Marcus said softly, kneeling just enough so only she could hear him. "The report says you were intoxicated. That you swerved into oncoming traffic. It's tragic, really. The pressure of motherhood finally broke you."

"That's a lie!" she shrieked, lunging at him, but her battered body gave out, and she collapsed against the linoleum.

Marcus stood back up, adjusting his silver tie clip. "Rest up, Elena. My lawyers will send the divorce papers to whatever halfway house you end up in."

He turned on his heel and walked away, the rhythmic click-clack of his shoes echoing down the hall. Elena lay on the floor, the cold seeping into her bones. But as she watched him leave, the suffocating terror in her chest began to crystallize. It hardened into something else. Something dangerous.
