Chapter 5 - The Trap is Sprung

Back at the apartment, Silas connected the burner phone to his decryption software.

"Bingo," Silas whispered as the screen lit up with deleted text messages.

There it was. Undeniable proof. Wire transfer confirmations, intersection coordinates, and a message from Marcus’s personal assistant: Target acquired. Make it look like a drunk driving accident.

"We have him," Elena cried, tears of relief finally breaking through. "I can get Leo back."

Suddenly, the heavy wooden door of the apartment splintered inward.

Three men in tactical gear burst into the room, armed with silenced pistols. Marcus hadn't just been waiting; he had tracked the burner phone the moment it was turned on.

"Run!" Silas yelled, flipping the heavy wooden desk over to create a barricade. Gunfire erupted, shattering the computer monitor.

Elena grabbed the burner phone, her maternal instinct taking over. She scrambled toward the fire escape window. Silas fired back with a revolver, taking one of the men down, but a bullet caught him in the shoulder.

"Go, Elena! Get it to the DA!" Silas screamed, bleeding on the floor.

Elena threw herself out the window, sliding down the rusty iron fire escape into the freezing, rain-slicked alleyway below. She ran into the darkness, clutching the phone to her chest. She was completely alone again. But this time, she had the weapon.
