Chapter 6 - The Burning Tower

The toxic gray smoke filled the cramped server room with terrifying speed.
Arthur was intentionally burning the penthouse suite to destroy all physical evidence of his massive financial crimes.
He intended to leave me locked in this reinforced vault to die of smoke inhalation before the fire department ever arrived.
I covered my mouth and nose with the fabric of my blouse, coughing violently as the air grew dangerously thin.
I frantically searched the dark walls for an emergency release lever, but the room was completely bare.
The heavy steel door was designed to protect millions of dollars of networking equipment from catastrophic fires.
It was entirely soundproof, meaning no one outside would hear me screaming for help.
I dropped to the floor, crawling on my hands and knees where the air was slightly cooler.
My eyes burned, and my vision began to blur as the lack of oxygen took its toll.
I noticed a small, rectangular maintenance panel secured near the bottom of the server rack.
I grabbed a loose metal bracket from the floor and began aggressively prying the panel away from the wall.
My lungs burned with every single breath, but pure adrenaline fueled my desperate movements.
The plastic panel finally snapped, revealing a narrow ventilation duct that led straight into the main hallway.
I squeezed my shoulders into the tight metal shaft, pushing myself forward with the last of my strength.
The metal was scorching hot against my skin, but I kept crawling until I reached the vent cover.
I kicked the metal grate with both of my heavy boots until it popped entirely out of the wall.
I tumbled out into the luxury corridor of the hotel, gasping desperately for fresh, breathable air.
The entire ninth floor was engulfed in thick smoke, and the piercing sound of fire alarms echoed everywhere.
I scrambled down the emergency stairwell, my legs trembling with complete exhaustion.
When I finally burst through the heavy glass doors of the hotel lobby, I collapsed onto the cool pavement outside.
Dozens of fire trucks and police cruisers were already swarming the street, their flashing lights blinding me.
A team of paramedics rushed over, placing an oxygen mask firmly over my face.
I sat on the bumper of the ambulance, finally feeling a profound sense of safety wash over me.
Suddenly, four men wearing dark tactical windbreakers pushed their way through the crowd of first responders.
The bold yellow letters printed across their backs read "FBI."
The lead agent walked directly up to me and pulled a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his belt.
May you like
"Clara Vance, you are under arrest for orchestrating a massive corporate embezzlement scheme and funding domestic terrorism," he announced loudly.
Before I could even process his terrifying words, he forcefully pulled my arms behind my back and locked the handcuffs around my wrists.
