Chapter 1 - The Forced Entry

The mechanical whine of the power drill grew louder, vibrating through the expensive hardwood floor of my apartment.
I did not scream.
I did not panic.
When you spend five years married to a manipulative narcissist, your fight-or-flight response becomes dangerously cold.
I grabbed my cell phone from the marble kitchen counter.
I dialed 911 and gave the emergency dispatcher my exact address in a steady, hushed whisper.
Then I walked over to the stove and wrapped my hand around the handle of a heavy cast-iron skillet.
The brass deadbolt finally gave way with a sickening metal crunch.
My heavy oak door swung open, violently hitting the entryway wall.
Arthur stood in the hallway alongside a nervous-looking man holding a smoking industrial drill.
My ex-husband was dressed in his signature custom Italian suit, looking just as arrogant as he had on our wedding day.
"You have exactly three seconds to get out of my home before the police arrive," I warned him without blinking.
Arthur casually stepped over the ruined lock and walked right into my foyer as if he owned the world.
"You are highly mistaken about who owns this home, Clara."
"The judge awarded this entire property to me yesterday afternoon," I stated firmly.
"Is that what your incompetent lawyer told you?" Arthur sneered.
He walked into the living room and began inspecting my expensive artwork with a smug smile.
"My mother called me last night in tears because you embarrassed her at the most important gala of the season."
"Your mother embarrassed herself by bidding on jewelry with money she does not have," I replied calmly.
"You are going to restore her black card access right now, or I am going to make your life a living nightmare."
Before I could tell him to go to hell, the sound of heavy boots echoed loudly down the corridor.
Two armed police officers stepped into the apartment with their hands resting cautiously on their duty belts.
I immediately lowered the heavy skillet and pointed directly at Arthur.
"Officers, this man just destroyed my front door and forced his way into my private residence."
The older officer frowned and took a step toward my ex-husband.
Arthur did not look the least bit intimidated by the police presence.
Instead, he calmly reached into his tailored jacket pocket and pulled out a thick stack of legal documents.
The papers clearly bore the official, raised seal of the county clerk's office.
"There has been a terrible misunderstanding, officer," Arthur said smoothly.
"My ex-wife is simply confused and highly emotional about the final terms of our divorce settlement."
The officer took the documents from Arthur and spent a long moment reading the top page.
His expression immediately hardened as he handed the papers back to my ex-husband.
The officer turned to look at me with eyes completely devoid of sympathy.
"Ma'am, according to this certified property deed, Mr. Vance is the sole legal owner of this residence."
May you like
"That is entirely impossible," I countered, feeling a sudden, terrifying chill sweep through the room.
"You need to pack a small bag and vacate the premises immediately, or I will be forced to arrest you for criminal trespassing," the officer ordered.
