Chapter 3 - The Hallway Threat.
The courtroom erupted into a frenzy of confused whispers and outright laughter.
The judge struck his gavel repeatedly, threatening to clear the entire room if they could not maintain decorum.
He declared a brief fifteen-minute recess for everyone to cool down.
Clara practically ran out of the double doors, desperate to find a quiet place to breathe.
She ducked into the empty marble hallway leading toward the public restrooms.
Before she could reach the door, a heavy hand grabbed her shoulder and spun her around violently.
It was Arthur, standing far too close, his polite courtroom facade completely stripped away.
His eyes were cold, dead, and entirely devoid of any human empathy.
He leaned into her ear, his breath smelling faintly of expensive peppermint and black coffee.
He whispered that she was playing a very dangerous game with people she did not understand.
Arthur softly informed her that her younger sister, Lily, was currently walking home from her university classes.
He casually mentioned the exact route Lily was taking and the color of the coat she was wearing.
He suggested that terrible, fatal traffic accidents happened to young girls every single day.
Arthur promised that if Clara did not change her plea to guilty, Lily would not make it home alive.
He stepped back, smoothed his tailored suit jacket, and walked away as if they had just discussed the weather.
Clara was left trembling against the cold marble wall, utterly consumed by a suffocating panic.
She rushed back into the courtroom, fully prepared to throw her life away to save her sister.
She stood before the judge, opening her mouth to officially change her legal plea.
Before she could speak, the heavy wooden doors at the back of the room swung open.
The judge announced that the prosecution had requested permission to call a surprise, last-minute witness.
