Chapter 2 - The Pro Se Gambit.

A wave of shocked murmurs rippled through the crowded gallery.
Clara stared at Finch in absolute disbelief, feeling the floor drop out from underneath her.
The judge banged his wooden gavel heavily to restore order to the chaotic room.
He looked down at Clara and asked if she understood the severe implications of her lawyer resting the case.
Clara realized in that terrifying second that Finch had been bought off or blackmailed by Arthur.
She stood up, her trembling legs somehow finding the strength to support her weight.
She looked directly at the judge and loudly declared that she was firing Mr. Finch effective immediately.
She announced her intention to invoke her right to represent herself pro se.
Arthur's practiced mask of sorrow slipped for a fraction of a second, revealing a flash of genuine irritation.
The judge reluctantly allowed her request, warning her that she was making a monumental mistake.
Clara did not hesitate to call Arthur right back to the witness stand for cross-examination.
She paced in front of the jury box, locking eyes with the man who had destroyed her life.
She demanded to know about the secret red ledger kept in his private offshore vault.
This ledger contained the true financial records that would prove Arthur was the real mastermind.
Arthur offered a condescending smile and reached into his leather briefcase.
He smoothly presented a thick, red, leather-bound book to the court.
He claimed he had brought it specifically to prove his complete innocence to the jury.
Clara eagerly grabbed the ledger, knowing his genuine, forged signatures were on every single page.
She aggressively flipped the book open to show the jury the damning evidence.

She froze in absolute horror as she stared at the crisp, white paper.
Every single page inside the heavy red ledger was completely blank.
