Chapter 6 - The Ticking Time Bomb

Julian stared at the flashing red numbers, paralyzed by the horrific realization that he had walked directly into a lethal trap.

He had abandoned his only chance of escaping the hotel to save a holographic illusion of his mother.

"We have to get out of this room right now!" Julian yelled, grabbing Clara by the arm to flee back toward the hallway.

Suddenly, heavy steel blast doors aggressively slammed down over the suite's main entrance and all the panoramic windows.

The automated lockdown sequence had been triggered remotely, turning the luxurious penthouse into an inescapable concrete tomb.

Julian desperately fired three rounds from the pistol directly into the steel barricade, but the bullets simply ricocheted harmlessly away.

They were completely trapped on the top floor of a skyscraper with a massive explosive set to detonate in ninety seconds.

Clara broke away from Julian's grip and sprinted directly toward the ticking bomb mounted on the marble pillar.

"What are you doing?!" Julian shouted, terrified she was going to accidentally trigger the explosive device prematurely.

"I have a doctorate in advanced biochemistry, and I recognize this specific compound," Clara replied frantically while examining the wires.

She explained that the explosive relied on a highly unstable liquid catalyst to trigger the massive blast radius.

If she could sever the exact wire controlling the pressure valve, the liquid would neutralize itself instantly.

Julian stood beside her, watching her trembling fingers hover dangerously over a tangled mess of red, blue, and yellow wires.

"You have exactly forty-five seconds, Clara," Julian warned, his voice remarkably calm in the face of impending death.

She pulled a sharp hairpin from her messy hair and used it to carefully pry open the plastic casing of the detonator.

Sweat poured profusely down her forehead as the timer aggressively beeped, reaching the final twenty seconds of their lives.

She took a deep breath, closed her eyes tightly, and violently ripped the blue wire entirely out of the circuit board.

The digital timer instantly froze on exactly three seconds, and the high-pitched whining of the explosive completely died down.

Julian collapsed to his knees in overwhelming relief, pulling Clara into a tight, incredibly grateful embrace.

Before they could celebrate their miraculous survival, a muffled, desperate banging sound echoed from the master bedroom closet.

Julian quickly stood up and approached the wooden doors, aiming his pistol squarely at the center of the wood.

He ripped the closet doors open, fully expecting to find another hidden mercenary waiting in ambush.

Instead, he found Vanessa's elderly father, Arthur, bound tightly in heavy duct tape and bleeding profusely from a severe head wound.
