Chapter 4 - The Best Man's Betrayal

Julian lunged desperately for the detonator, but he was a fraction of a second too late.
A deafening explosion violently rocked the far wall of the office, blowing the bulletproof window completely out of its steel frame.
The massive shockwave sent Julian flying backward across the room, crashing heavily into a bookshelf.
Thick, black smoke instantly filled the office, triggering the shrieking fire alarms and the overhead sprinkler system.
Marcus used the chaotic distraction to scramble to his feet, pulling a secondary knife from his ankle holster.
He advanced slowly toward Julian, coughing through the toxic smoke with a look of pure, unadulterated hatred.
"I have spent my entire life standing in your shadow, pretending to be your loyal servant," Marcus spat furiously.
He confessed that he and Vanessa had been carrying on a passionate, secret affair for over two entire years.
They had orchestrated this elaborate wedding simply to inherit Julian's massive technology empire upon his tragic, untimely death.
Julian struggled to stand, his vision blurred and his ears ringing painfully from the concussive blast.
Marcus raised the hunting knife high, preparing to plunge the jagged blade directly into Julian's chest.
Suddenly, a heavy rolling office chair smashed violently into the back of Marcus's knees, buckling his legs instantly.
Clara had crawled out from under the desk, using her quick thinking to completely disrupt the fatal strike.
Julian immediately seized the golden opportunity, delivering a brutal right hook directly to his former best friend's jaw.
Marcus collapsed heavily to the soaked carpet, entirely unconscious before his head even hit the floor.
Julian grabbed the dropped pistol from the corner of the room and checked the remaining ammunition in the magazine.
"We have to move right now before the rest of the tactical team arrives," Julian yelled over the blaring alarms.
He grabbed Clara's hand and pulled her out into the smoky, chaotic hallway of the luxury hotel.
The entire floor was completely deserted, as the wealthy guests had undoubtedly evacuated the building during the explosion.
Julian led Clara toward the emergency stairwell, determined to reach the underground parking garage to find a vehicle.
As he pushed the heavy metal fire door open, his foot kicked a discarded smartphone lying on the concrete landing.
The screen of the dropped phone was still glowing brightly, displaying an active, live video surveillance feed.
Julian picked up the device and stared at the terrifying footage, his heart plummeting completely into his stomach.

The live video showed his elderly mother tied aggressively to a wooden chair in the hotel's penthouse suite.
A masked mercenary was standing directly behind her, holding a large, terrifyingly sharp machete against her throat.
