Chapter 1 - The Unexpected Offer

Daniel stared at the young girl in absolute astonishment as the relentless crying finally ceased.
The sudden silence in the first-class cabin felt almost deafening after three hours of pure torture.
He watched her gently rock his six-month-old daughter, her movements fluid and entirely natural.
"My name is Elara," she whispered softly, never taking her eyes off the sleeping infant.
Daniel exhaled a massive breath he did not even realize he had been holding.
He asked her what a teenager with a backpack full of advanced math was doing on a red-eye flight to London.
Elara explained that she had won a spot in a prestigious international mathematics tournament.
She admitted quietly that she was flying economy because she had used her entire life savings just to buy the cheapest ticket available.
Daniel looked down at his beautiful daughter, who was now sleeping peacefully against the shoulder of a complete stranger.
He made a sudden, desperate decision that would forever alter the course of both their lives.
He offered to pay Elara fifty thousand dollars to act as Sophie’s temporary nanny for the duration of his two-week business trip.
Elara's eyes widened in pure shock at the staggering amount of money.
She hesitated for a brief moment before slowly nodding her head in agreement.
Daniel felt a massive wave of relief wash over him as the plane finally began its descent into Heathrow Airport.
He reached over to help Elara gather her belongings from the empty seat beside her.
As he lifted her worn backpack, the frayed zipper snagged on the armrest and tore completely open.
Textbooks, pencils, and a handful of loose papers scattered across the plush carpet of the aisle.
Daniel knelt down to help her pick up the spilled items.
His hands completely froze when he reached for a glossy, five-by-seven photograph resting near his expensive leather shoes.

It was a candid, beautifully lit picture of a smiling blonde woman sitting in a park.
The woman in the photograph was Daniel's wife, Eleanor, who had supposedly died in a tragic car accident exactly one year ago.
