Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Shadows

Daniel did not hesitate or panic as the armed intruder stepped into the pale moonlight.
He used his elite personal combat training to silently roll off the sofa and lunge across the room.
He grabbed the assassin's wrist, twisting it violently until the heavy pistol clattered harmlessly onto the expensive rug.
Daniel pinned the massive man securely to the floor, pressing a heavy forearm against his throat.
He did not want to make a sound that would wake Lily or her mother down the hall.
The intruder laughed through bloody teeth, completely unfazed by the brutal takedown.
"You are incredibly fast for a rich guy," the man choked out with a sickening grin.
"Who sent you into my home?" Daniel demanded in a terrifying whisper.
"Nathan Mercer sends his regards, and he wants his stolen cartel money back," the assassin sneered.
Daniel was genuinely shocked that his former business partner would stoop to hiring violent cartel hitmen.
He dragged the unconscious assassin toward the central security office to alert his guards.
He found all three of his night-shift security officers lying unconscious on the tile floor.
Daniel realized instantly that this was a massive, highly coordinated assault on his entire estate.
He sprinted toward the staff wing to wake Maria and get her to safety.

He threw open the heavy oak door of her bedroom without knocking.
He found himself staring directly down the barrel of a loaded gun held by his terrified housekeeper.
