Chapter 2 - The Weight of a Blanket

For three days, Daniel kept the terrifying revelation about his housekeeper a complete secret.
He needed to know if the woman living under his roof was a dangerous threat or simply a desperate runaway.
He decided to run a cruel psychological test to see if anyone in this massive estate possessed genuine humanity.
Late on a rainy Thursday night, Daniel laid down on his expensive living-room sofa and pretended to fall asleep.
He expected the staff to simply ignore his apparent exhaustion and walk right past him.
Then he heard the tiny, unmistakable squeak of Lily's sneakers stopping beside his head.
The little girl whispered his name softly, waited for a response, and then quietly walked away.
For one bitter second, the billionaire almost smiled at the cruelty of being absolutely right about human nature.
Then came a heavy, scraping dragging sound echoing from the distant hallway.
Lily hauled a massive, hand-knitted quilt across the cold marble floor, struggling under its immense weight.
She draped the heavy blanket over Daniel's massive frame, tucking the edges awkwardly around his broad shoulders.
She patted his cheek gently with her tiny hand.
"Don't be sad anymore, Mister Monster," she whispered sweetly into the dark room.
Daniel clamped his eyes shut as a single, burning tear rolled down his face, breaking decades of absolute emotional control.
He cried silently under the heavy quilt, mourning the six-year-old boy he had completely buried.

After a few minutes, he slowly opened his eyes to finally thank the sweet child.
His heart stopped when he saw a strange man standing in the dark shadows of the hallway holding a suppressed pistol.
