Chapter 9 - The Roof Edge Fight

Marcus screamed in absolute agony as his kneecap shattered completely under the heavy blow.
He dropped his hunting knife and fell hard onto the rough gravel of the roof.
Victoria looked up in sheer shock to see Leo standing there, gripping a bloody steel pipe with both small hands.
The brave little boy had not run away into the woods to hide.
He had climbed the fire escape all by himself to save the woman who had protected him.
"Get away from her right now!" Leo screamed, raising the heavy pipe for another desperate swing.
But Marcus was a highly trained killer, and he recovered from the pain incredibly fast.
He lunged forward with terrifying speed, tackling the small boy to the unforgiving ground.
The heavy steel pipe clattered uselessly away across the dark rooftop.
Marcus grabbed Leo by his worn collar and dragged him roughly toward the very edge of the towering mansion.
"If I am going down tonight, I am taking your precious little stray with me!" Marcus roared insanely.
He dangled the screaming child over the terrifying sixty-foot drop to the stone patio below.
Victoria scrambled frantically to her feet, her heart pounding against her ribs like a trapped bird.
"Please, Marcus, just take me and let him go!" she begged, tears blinding her vision.
The dark Syndicate helicopter suddenly hovered right beside the roof, shining a blinding searchlight onto the scene.
The side door slid open, but instead of armed backup, federal agents were aiming sniper rifles directly at Marcus.
"Drop the boy and put your hands in the air instantly!" a voice boomed over a massive megaphone.
Marcus realized he was completely trapped, with nowhere left to run or hide.
He smiled a sickening, twisted smile and slowly opened his bloody fingers.
Leo screamed in pure terror as he began to fall backward into the empty, black abyss.

Victoria dove forward with everything she had, sliding painfully across the sharp gravel on her stomach.
She shot her arm over the concrete ledge and blindly grabbed into the empty air.
