Chapter 7 - The Mastermind's Trap
Dozens of armed mercenaries completely surrounded the exhausted trio on the wet grass.
Marcus walked slowly out of the shadows, clapping his hands together in a mocking round of applause.
"You really are your father's daughter, Victoria," he sneered, kicking a discarded weapon away from her reach.
Two massive guards grabbed Victoria by her arms and hauled her roughly to her feet.
Another guard violently snatched Leo and Julian, forcing the crying children onto their knees.
"What do you actually want, Marcus?" Victoria demanded, spitting blood onto his expensive shoes.
Marcus wiped his shoe in disgust and pulled a sleek electronic tablet from his jacket pocket.
"Your father hid the master access codes to the Syndicate's offshore accounts inside his personal vault," Marcus explained.
"I need your biometric retinal scan to open that vault tonight, or these two lovely boys will die right here," he threatened.
He pressed the cold, steel barrel of his handgun directly against Leo's temple.
Victoria felt her entire world crash down around her in a horrifying wave of panic.
She knew that if she unlocked the vault, Marcus would simply execute all of them anyway.
But if she refused, he would blow Leo's brains out right in front of her.
"Let the children walk away into the woods, and I will give you everything you want," Victoria bargained desperately.
Marcus laughed coldly, cocking the hammer of the heavy pistol.
"I do not negotiate with dead women," he whispered, pressing the gun harder against the child's head.
Victoria slowly closed her eyes, preparing to surrender her family's entire legacy to save the boys.
"Okay, I will do it," she cried out in defeat.
Suddenly, a loud, piercing siren began blaring from the front gates of the massive estate.

Red and blue flashing lights violently illuminated the dark tree line in the distance.
Marcus cursed loudly, realizing the real federal authorities had somehow finally arrived.
