Chapter 9 - The Race Against Time

My mother’s wicked laughter echoed in the small interrogation room as I realized the magnitude of her trap.

I ran out of the room and immediately called Marcus, waking my lawyer up in the middle of the night.

I explained the secret shell corporation my mother claimed controlled my entire livelihood.

Marcus told me that if my father had signed those papers, my mother had complete legal authority to sell everything I owned.

He said the only way to stop the liquidation was to find my father’s original, unaltered will.

I remembered my father telling me a secret when I was a teenager, a memory I hadn't thought of in years.

He told me he had built a hidden wall safe in the basement of my childhood home just in case of emergencies.

I told Detective Miller about the safe, and he agreed to escort me to my mother’s house to search for it.

We drove through the dark streets, the clock ticking dangerously close to the morning banking hours.

We arrived at my mother’s sprawling suburban home, which was now an active crime scene wrapped in yellow tape.

I led the detective down into the dusty, unfinished basement and began tapping on the wooden paneling.

After ten agonizing minutes, I heard a hollow thud behind a loose piece of oak trim.

I pried the wood away and found a small, combination dial safe hidden in the concrete foundation.

I entered my birthdate, the only code my father ever used, and the heavy metal door clicked open.

Inside was a sealed envelope containing my father’s true, finalized will and a revocation of the shell corporation.

Marcus reviewed the documents via video call and confirmed they legally destroyed my mother’s claim to my assets.

I felt a massive weight lift off my chest, knowing my house and my business were finally safe.

But my moment of relief was abruptly shattered when my phone rang with a frantic call from Vanessa’s husband.

He was sobbing uncontrollably into the receiver.

He said Vanessa had managed to evade police custody at my house and had taken their son, Mason.

She had stolen his passport and was currently driving toward the international airport to flee the country.
