Chapter 8 - The Mother of All Lies

I stared at my mother’s signature on the illegal loan document in absolute disbelief.

My mother, the woman who preached about family values and appearances, was in debt to the mob.

The scarred man explained that my mother had been borrowing money for a decade to maintain her lavish lifestyle after my father died.

She used Vanessa’s gambling problem as a convenient smokescreen to hide her own massive financial crimes.

Suddenly, the wail of police sirens pierced the night air, growing louder by the second.

Detective Miller had assigned a covert surveillance unit to follow me home from the precinct.

The syndicate leader cursed loudly and ordered his men to head for the back door.

Before they could escape, the front windows shattered as SWAT officers breached the house with flashbang grenades.

The blinding light and deafening noise incapacitated the criminals instantly.

I covered my ears and ducked as heavily armed police swarmed the living room and arrested the men.

Detective Miller pulled me out of the chaos and escorted me safely to his cruiser.

Vanessa was hyperventilating on the lawn, finally realizing the true scope of our mother's betrayal.

Miller told me they had just raided my mother’s house and brought her into the station for questioning.

I rode with the detective back to the precinct, demanding to speak to my mother face-to-face.

I walked into the interrogation room where she sat looking disheveled and furious.

I slammed the mob loan document onto the metal table right in front of her.

I asked her how she could possibly sell out her own daughters to ruthless criminals.

My mother did not cry or apologize.

She looked at me with cold, resentful eyes and admitted she always hated my success and independence.

She wanted to completely destroy my finances so I would be forced to move back home and take care of her forever.

She smiled wickedly and told me I hadn't won yet.

She revealed that right before my father died, she convinced him to sign legal documents tying my architectural firm and my house to a secret family shell corporation.

She said that since she controlled the corporation, she could legally liquidate all my assets by tomorrow morning.
