Chapter 5 - The Interrogation

The cold steel of the handcuffs bit into my wrists as they escorted me out of my office.

I was placed in the back of a police cruiser while my coworkers watched in stunned silence.

Vanessa stood on the sidewalk, smiling triumphantly as I was driven away.

At the precinct, I was thrown into a gray interrogation room that smelled of stale coffee and bleach.

A seasoned detective named Miller sat across from me and tossed a thick folder onto the metal table.

He said my mother had filed a police report claiming I stole her retirement fund to support a lavish lifestyle.

I demanded my one phone call and immediately contacted Marcus.

My lawyer arrived thirty minutes later carrying a briefcase full of my meticulous financial records.

Marcus presented ten years of bank statements proving I had been the one funding my mother’s life.

Detective Miller reviewed the documents carefully, his initial hostility slowly fading into confusion.

He realized my mother had completely fabricated the elder abuse story to frame me.

Miller closed the folder and leaned back in his chair with a heavy sigh.

He told me that my mother and sister were playing a very dangerous game with the wrong people.

I asked him what he meant by that.

Miller pulled a tablet from his briefcase and turned the screen toward me.

It was surveillance footage from a local dive bar taken two nights ago.

The video clearly showed Vanessa handing a thick envelope of cash to a notorious local loan shark.

Detective Miller looked me dead in the eye.

He said Vanessa did not take out that fifty thousand dollar loan just to ruin my credit.

She took it out to pay off a mob debt, and she had used my home address as the collateral.
