Chapter 2 - The Forged Signature

I ripped the chain off the door and snatched the fake contract from the hotel manager.
I told him I was a victim of identity theft and that he needed to cancel the party immediately.
He looked terrified as I slammed the door and sprinted to my car.
I drove straight to my bank in downtown Atlanta, my heart hammering against my ribs.
I demanded to speak with the branch manager, a woman named Sarah who had known me for years.
Sarah ushered me into her glass office and pulled up my financial portfolio on her monitor.
She looked extremely confused when I told her I did not authorize the fifty thousand dollar loan.
Sarah said the loan was finalized online at two in the morning using my exact social security number and security questions.
I realized my mother must have given Vanessa all of my personal information.
They had teamed up to financially ruin me just because I said no to a birthday cake.
I instructed Sarah to freeze all of my accounts and flag the new loan as fraudulent.
Sarah typed frantically on her keyboard, her face suddenly draining of color.
She looked at me with wide, apologetic eyes.
She said she could not freeze the loan account because the funds had already been wired out.
I asked her where fifty thousand dollars could have possibly gone in a matter of hours.
Sarah turned her monitor around so I could see the screen.

The money had been wired to an offshore business account registered to a man named David Vance.
David was my ex-fiancé who had cheated on me and broken my heart three years ago.
