Chapter 2 - The Vanguard Heir

Clara walked out into the freezing midnight air, the wet uniform clinging to her shivering body. She had just committed social suicide. The Sterling family would destroy her. They would probably have her arrested for corporate slander. But she couldn't take the abuse anymore.
A sleek, black Rolls-Royce Phantom pulled up to the curb beside her. The back door opened, and a man stepped out.
He was strikingly handsome, dressed in a midnight-blue tuxedo, with piercing cobalt eyes that seemed to analyze every detail of her existence. It was Alexander Vance, the city’s most ruthless venture capitalist and the sworn enemy of the Sterling family.
"Clara Vanguard," Alexander said smoothly, leaning against the open door. "That was quite the exit."
Clara froze. She hadn't used the name Vanguard in fifteen years. "My name is Clara Hayes."
"Your mother’s maiden name," Alexander corrected, pulling a thick manila folder from the backseat. "I know who you are, Clara. I know your father, Thomas Vanguard, built the Majestic Sovereign Hotel. And I know that fifteen years ago, Richard Sterling forged the transfer deeds, stole this hotel, and drove your father to an early grave."
Clara’s breath hitched. The secret her mother had forced her to bury to keep them safe was suddenly out in the open.
"What do you want?" Clara whispered, her fists clenched.
"I want to destroy the Sterling family," Alexander said, his eyes darkening with absolute malice. "And you, as the sole blood heir to the Vanguard estate, are the only weapon that can pierce their legal armor. Get in the car, Clara. I’ll pay for your sister’s surgery tomorrow. In exchange, we burn the Sterlings to the ground."

Clara looked back at the glowing neon sign of the hotel her father had built. She looked at Alexander’s outstretched hand.
She got in the car.
