Chapter 8 - The Fall

The loud crack of Harper’s pistol echoed fiercely above the chaotic gunfire of the warehouse.

Derek stumbled backward, releasing his grip on her hair as a dark stain spread rapidly across his shirt.

He looked down at his stomach in sheer disbelief, unable to process that his victim had fought back.

Harper did not wait to see if he would fall.

She grabbed Noah by his tiny hand and shoved him forcefully toward Gabriel’s position.

Gabriel caught the boy and pulled him safely behind the reinforced concrete pillar.

Derek let out a guttural scream of rage and blindly raised his revolver toward Harper.

He fired two wild shots, the bullets sparking dangerously against the metal container next to her head.

Gabriel leaned out from cover and fired his own weapon with lethal, absolute precision.

His bullet struck Derek directly in the shoulder, spinning the corrupt cop violently to the floor.

Before Gabriel could finish him off, the heavy metal doors of the warehouse were completely blown away.

A dozen black tactical vans swarmed into the building, their tires screeching on the polished concrete.

Gabriel’s true backup had finally arrived, led by his heavily armed, loyal lieutenants.

They ruthlessly opened fire on the Russian mercenaries, turning the tide of the battle in seconds.

The Russians panicked, dropping their weapons and scrambling desperately for the rear exits.

Gabriel ran across the open floor, shielding Harper with his own body as stray bullets flew past them.

He pulled her behind the safety of the heavy tactical vans, checking her frantically for any injuries.

Harper was shaking uncontrollably, the adrenaline finally crashing out of her exhausted system.

She dropped the empty pistol and buried her face in Gabriel’s chest, sobbing in absolute relief.

Gabriel wrapped his strong arms around her, kissing the top of her head while keeping his weapon raised.

He swore to her that she would never have to touch another gun for the rest of her life.

Suddenly, a loud, unnatural hissing sound cut entirely through the fading gunfire.

Derek had crawled across the bloody floor toward a massive stack of highly flammable chemical drums.

He smiled insanely, holding a specialized incendiary flare tightly in his bloody hand.

He struck the flare against the concrete and tossed it directly into the leaking chemicals.
