Chapter 3 - The Empty Room

Harper stared at Gabriel in absolute shock.
The man who had tortured her for three years was entirely wrapped up in the Boston mafia's deadliest war.
Gabriel explained that his syndicate had been hunting Derek for months to plug a massive security leak.
Harper realized that her desperate attempt to find a safe job had accidentally dropped her right into the center of a bloodbath.
She grabbed Gabriel’s arm, her maternal instincts completely overriding her fear of him.
She told him that if Derek was involved with the mob, her little brother Noah was in imminent danger.
Gabriel did not hesitate for a single second.
He pulled a heavy pistol from his desk and loaded a fresh magazine with sharp, practiced movements.
He ordered three of his best men to bring an armored SUV to the underground garage immediately.
Harper ran alongside him as they moved quickly through the cavernous basement of the mansion.
They climbed into the back of a black Mercedes SUV with bulletproof windows.
Gabriel told his driver to get them to Dorchester as fast as physically possible.
The heavy vehicle tore through the wet streets of Boston, ignoring every red light in the city.
Harper stared out the dark window, silently praying that the eight-year-old boy was still safely asleep.
Noah was the only family she had left in the entire world.
The SUV screeched to a halt outside her rundown apartment building on the rough side of town.
Gabriel drew his weapon and instructed Harper to stay completely behind him.
They rushed up the concrete stairs to the second floor, their footsteps echoing loudly in the dirty hallway.
Harper’s heart completely stopped when they reached the end of the corridor.
The front door to her apartment had been violently kicked entirely off its hinges.
Gabriel moved into the room first, clearing the tiny living space with lethal precision.
Harper pushed past him, screaming Noah's name as she ran into the tiny bedroom.

The bed was completely empty, the sheets torn, and Noah’s favorite stuffed bear was lying in a pool of fresh blood.
A burner phone resting on the broken nightstand suddenly began to ring.
