Chapter 2 - The Monster At The Gate
Harper felt all the blood drain entirely from her face at the sound of Derek’s name.
Her knees buckled, but Gabriel caught her arm before she could hit the floor.
His grip was incredibly strong but surprisingly gentle against her battered skin.
He pulled her up and commanded her to finish putting on her uniform.
Harper scrambled to zip up her dress, her fingers numb with absolute terror.
She told Gabriel that Derek would kill her and her little brother if he found them here.
Gabriel simply adjusted his cuffs and stared at her with a terrifying calm.
He told her that Derek Lawson did not own the streets of Beacon Hill.
Gabriel tapped his radio and ordered his men to keep the police officer at the gate.
He grabbed Harper’s hand and led her out of the bathroom, pulling her down a hidden servant's staircase.
They descended into a dark, soundproof security room filled with glowing camera monitors.
On the main screen, Harper saw Derek screaming at two massive armed guards in the rain.
Derek was waving his police badge wildly, his face twisted in a familiar, violent rage.
Harper began to hyperventilate, stepping back into the shadows of the small room.
Gabriel walked over to a microphone on the console and pressed the intercom button.
His voice boomed through the speakers at the front gate, demanding to know why a cheap beat cop was trespassing on his property.
Derek sneered at the camera, claiming he had a legal warrant for a stolen vehicle.
Gabriel laughed, a dark and hollow sound that made Harper shiver.
He informed Derek that he owned the judges who signed those warrants.
Gabriel warned the corrupt cop that he had exactly ten seconds to leave before his men opened fire.
Derek glared at the camera, spitting on the iron gate before finally backing away toward his cruiser.
Harper let out a ragged breath, believing she was finally safe for the night.
But Gabriel turned around and looked at her with an expression of pure, calculated danger.

He coldly informed her that Derek Lawson was not just a random abusive cop.
He revealed that Derek had been secretly smuggling illegal weapons for Gabriel’s biggest rival.
