Chapter 4 - The Influencer's Downfall

Claire zipped up the heavy duffel bag and shoved it deep into the back of her designer closet.
She had absolutely no intention of sticking around to watch Daniel’s entire life burn to the ground.
She sat down at her vanity mirror and carefully reapplied her flawless makeup to prepare for her online audience.
She set up her ring light and pressed record on her smartphone.
She crafted a perfectly tearful narrative, claiming that she was a victim of emotional abuse by her cruel father-in-law.
She begged her followers to send donations to a specific online link to help her survive this terrible family tragedy.
Within ten minutes, the video had amassed thousands of views and supportive comments from strangers.
She smiled wickedly, watching the digital donations begin to roll into her private offshore account.
Meanwhile, Daniel sat in a smoky dive bar across town, meeting with the private investigator he had hired.
The investigator was a greasy man named Vance who smelled heavily of cheap cologne and stale cigarettes.
Vance slid a manila folder across the sticky wooden table.
He proudly announced that he had successfully tracked my chauffeured Lincoln to an exclusive penthouse hotel downtown.
Daniel eagerly opened the folder and verified the high-resolution surveillance photos of me entering the lobby.
He handed Vance an envelope containing his last two thousand dollars in cash.
Daniel felt a surge of arrogant power, completely convinced he was about to regain control of his comfortable life.
He rushed back to the Beacon Hill house to share the supposedly brilliant news with his wife.
He burst through the front door and excitedly called out Claire’s name.
The house was eerily silent.
Daniel walked up the grand staircase and entered the master bedroom.
The closet doors were wide open, and half of Claire’s expensive clothing was completely missing.
He noticed the ring light still illuminated in the corner of the room.
Daniel walked over and saw Claire’s laptop resting open on the vanity desk.
He looked at the screen and realized she had accidentally left her internet browser open.
The screen displayed a massive digital transfer of funds from his personal savings into an unknown foreign bank.
He frantically checked his own mobile banking application.
His life savings had been completely drained down to absolute zero.
Daniel fell to his knees on the plush carpet, the realization of his wife’s ultimate betrayal hitting him like a physical blow.
He had alienated his only loving parent for a woman who viewed him purely as an ATM machine.
His phone buzzed in his pocket with an urgent notification.
It was an email from the social media platform regarding Claire’s newly posted video.
He watched in horror as his wife publicly slandered our family name for online sympathy money.
Daniel’s grief instantly transformed into a burning, uncontrollable rage.
He grabbed his car keys and drove recklessly toward the downtown luxury hotel where I was staying.
He planned to burst into my suite, beg for my absolute forgiveness, and ask for a massive legal team to destroy Claire.
He bribed a hotel bellhop to give him the exact room number of my penthouse suite.
Daniel rode the glass elevator to the top floor, his heart hammering violently against his ribs.
He aggressively pounded his fist against the heavy mahogany door of my suite.
The door slowly swung open, but I was not the one standing on the other side.

Daniel stumbled backward, his face turning completely pale with sheer, unadulterated terror.
Standing in the doorway was a woman Daniel had sworn to me died in a tragic car accident five years ago.
