Chapter 2 - The Declined Cards

Two evenings later, Daniel took Claire to an incredibly expensive restaurant in Cambridge.

They ordered imported wine, fresh oysters, and the most expensive steaks on the menu.

Claire spent twenty minutes filming the aesthetics of their table for her thousands of followers.

When the leather checkbook arrived, Daniel confidently placed his heavy metal credit card inside.

The waiter returned a few minutes later with a highly apologetic expression.

He quietly informed Daniel that the card had been declined.

Daniel laughed nervously, blaming it on a bank security error, and handed over a second card.

The waiter returned again, looking even more uncomfortable.

The second card had also been completely rejected.

Daniel’s face turned a deep shade of crimson as nearby diners began to pretend they were not staring.

He pulled out a third card, his hands shaking slightly in the dim restaurant lighting.

When that one failed, he was forced to pay the massive bill with the personal debit card connected to his own modest checking account.

Claire leaned across the table and furiously whispered that the situation was deeply humiliating.

She demanded to know what was happening with their money.

She did not realize that the money had never actually belonged to them.

The following morning, a loud diesel engine woke Daniel up from a deep sleep.

He looked out the bedroom window and panicked.

A heavy tow truck was currently hooking up the luxury BMW parked in the driveway.

Daniel ran outside in his undershirt, frantically waving the lease paperwork in the cold morning air.

He demanded that the driver stop stealing his vehicle immediately.

The driver calmly showed Daniel the repossession order from the corporate leasing company.

The company was fully owned by my primary trust, and I had simply canceled the corporate lease.

Claire rushed onto the porch and began filming the tow truck driver with her phone.

She threatened to expose his company to her massive online audience.

She quickly lowered her phone and deleted the video when she realized her followers would see her car being repossessed.

That afternoon, a formal envelope arrived via certified mail.

Claire impatiently signed for it, assuming it was a brand deal contract.

Inside was a legal notice drafted by Michael Wallace.

It explained that their occupancy arrangement at the Beacon Hill property was currently under official review.

They were instructed to establish their own household utility accounts or prepare to move by the stated deadline.

My phone began ringing incessantly just before dinner.

Daniel left seven frantic voicemails that day alone.

He begged me to call the bank and fix whatever terrible error had frozen their accounts.

By the fourth day of silence, his tone completely shifted from arrogant commands to desperate pleas.

He claimed they were incredibly worried about my mental health.

His sudden concern only appeared after his absolute control had disappeared.

The next morning, Daniel stormed into the local bank branch and demanded to speak to the manager.

He insisted that his accounts be restored immediately.

The branch manager calmly turned his computer monitor around.

He showed Daniel the actual legal structure of the Bennett Family Trust.

The screen clearly listed me as the primary trustee and the sole authorized signatory.

Daniel was merely listed as a secondary user with highly revocable spending privileges.

He had absolutely no ownership rights to a single dime.

Daniel slammed his fist on the desk and threatened to declare me legally incompetent.

He pulled out his phone and dialed a shady lawyer he knew from college.

He boldly promised to take everything I owned through a brutal court battle.

The bank manager simply smiled and handed Daniel a printed photograph that had been left in the file.

Daniel looked at the photograph and the blood drained completely from his face.
